BR had many different designs of ballast hopper. The 'Gannets' were an LMS design and two batches were built for BR, originally ordered by the LMS. Unlike most other ballast hoppers they were unfitted and the doors could only be released from the side. This was potentially dangerous and I believe the Health and Safety legislation ensured their early demise. The BR diagram 1/581 has the code name 'Trout' crossed through and replaced by 'Gannet', however 25 years later both of these examples remained as Trouts.
NOTE these are low quality scans and may not print well.
