Introduced either late 1982 or early 1983 as a loco for freight only, and initially mostly for the Merry go round coal trains. They were said to be successful and easily maintained, but poor on wet rail which made them unsuitable for use in colliery sidings. Later some were used in used in Spain but now are stored or destroyed. They haven't worked in Britain since the early 2000s. Others have been condemned and 58016 is conserved.
