Large numbers of wagons were built to the smaller UK loading gauge that were registered to work extensively across Europe, transferring using ferries and more recently the Channel Tunnel. Brakes, couplings and suspension all had to be compatible. The variety of wagons, and the loads that they carried was very large, but hazardous loads were not permitted through the Chunnel, so many interesting wagons no longer come to the UK.
In recent years, there has been an increasing trend for wagons which usually work only in the UK to be registered as "international".
Each wagon type has its own letter based describer, and TOPS codes are not normally shown.
