Introduced in 1977 the
Class 56 was probably the first diesel locomotive on BR designed only for heavy freight work, and had no way to heat coaching stock. Powerful at 3,250 bhp.
The first thirty locomotives (Nos.56001-56030) were built by
Electroputere in
Romania, 56031 to 56115 and 116 to 135 by BREL Crewe. Many have been scrapped and a few work in Hungary, however a number of been refurbished and 5 are owned by conservation companies.
