British Railways built a prototype and then 139 wagons in 1956 of diagram 1/005 which were designed to receive red hot iron pigs at the Scunthorpe steel works. Strongly constructed they had a steel floor which sloped towards the centre line where a slot provided drainage - as the pigs could be sprayed with water to cool them. Later some were converted to carry strip coil, with the centre portion of the ends cut down to allow the 'hook' of crane to pick the coil up.
