Early in its history BR built two distinctive designs of wooden bodied medium open merchandise wagon. 397 were an LMS design BR diagram 1/017 the other 100 were nominally to an SR design, BR Diagram 1/016; however they shared the lot number with the unacceptable 5 plank dropside and originally had independent brake rigging.
