Introduced in 1967, 50 locomotives which were intended to haul trains north of Crewe over Shap and Beatock prior to the extension of electrification on the West Coast mainline. Later they were used on the Southern and Western in the West Country. Reportedly a development of the successful, ill-fated DP2, but technically too complex.
