From about 1978 BR rebuilt ex 21 and 24ton mineral wagons with a new body design which had no end doors and only a single side door offset towards the left. They were all introduced in freight brown, despite being unfitted. The Larkin & Mann MRC article (see below) suggests 946 were rebuilt.
