During the 1980s there was increasing use of small machines which were easily portable by road that could run on rails to do various maintenance jobs. Permaquip provided a range of such machines, and this collection includes those that tamp ballast, insert and remove rail fasteners, permit work on overhead electrification, high lift for use in tunnels and beneath bridges. These vehicles are often difficult to identify, with little information on origin.
