On the south side of the Thames estuary was a scrap yard at Queenborough that had been in use for some years and a separate enterprise of a steelworks which opened in 1972. Sheerness Steel works relied solely on using scrap metal, with no pig iron or iron ore used.
Their fleet of specialist scrap wagons worked widely and there are collections for them. https://paulbartlett.zenfolio.com/sheernesssteelpxa https://paulbartlett.zenfolio.com/sheernesssteelpoa
