Scarlet Macaw (Ara macao) have been the subject of various conservation efforts in Costa Rica. In Tarcoles many locals have put up nesting boxes and nurtured their presence, so making them easily observed eating almonds. Similarly at Punta Islita the Ara Project has released many, some of which return to dine, but can also be seen at the beach. Other wild macaw were seen at Laguna del Lagarto.
