The SR hauled ballast long distances from Meldon so provided Vacuum braked wagons. 60 were built by Birmingham RCW in 1928 on the standard RCH 21ft. 6in underframe. Unusually the second plank from the top was steel channel. Surviving into the 1990s, by then they were probably the oldest fleet of wagons still operating.
