Mermaid ballast wagons discharge their load by tipping sideways, a feature often found on narrow gauge and industrial railways. Metro Cammel introduced the design in 1930 and it continued to be built for 30 years. The early batches were built unfitted and many were converted to vacuum brake at Horwich in 1980. Cambrian make a 4mm kit.
