Only 2 experimental ballast wagons were built at Shildon in 1982. At 50ft long with 7 doors it was the largest wagon type built for such traffic. It is likely that it was decided that, instead of new build, the Turbots with new bodies on reclaimed frames would be both cheaper and more practical. Reportedly used to carry scrap metal from Eastleigh, both Halibut were condemned 15/02/2005
